De Officiersclub van Kaunas, gebouwd in 1937, is een extravagant bouwwerk uit het late interbellum. De stijl is nationalistisch en de symbolen zijn patriottisch. Het paleis is opgetrokken uit lokale bouwmaterialen als uitdrukking van de aanwezigheid van de staat en de publieke noden.

Maar wat gebeurt er met dit gebouw als we alle mythische en historische lagen weghalen? Dit project stelt het creëren van mythes met behulp van architectuur in vraag. Wat blijft er over als de laag van de mythe er niet meer is?
In de eerste fase werden de mythes gedefinieerd en verwijderd in een nieuwe set architecturale tekeningen en maquettes. Het gebouw was naakt. Wat overbleef, was een ‘neutrale’ architecturale ruimte die beschreven kon worden aan de hand van compositie, verhoudingen en materialen. Zou ze nog bewonderd worden? Zouden mensen zich er nog mee kunnen identificeren?
Tijdens de publieke presentatie van het eerste deel van het project verzamelden de inwoners van Kaunas fotografische bewijzen van de mythe van de officiersclub. Herinneringen aan The Naked Building, dat weinigen in het echt hebben gezien. Van de dertig foto’s die dag verzameld, vertaalde de kunstenares er vijf naar prints. Een tweede reeks prints is geïnspireerd op de eerste, werkt er verder op door en speelt met de compositie van de eerdere ‘bewijzen’. Alle tien creëren ze een nieuwe mythe, The Myth of the Naked Building.

Expo in Kaunas, Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2022
Momenteel is 'The Myth of the Club' te bewonderen op de toonaangevende internationale tentoonstelling Modernism for the Future 360 365 in het voormalige Postgebouw van Kaunas (Litouwen). De expo werd plechtig geopend door de premier en de minister van cultuur van Litouwen naar aanleiding van de inhuldiging van Kaunas als Europese Culturele Hoofdstad 2022.

But what happens to this building if we strip away all the mythical and historical layers? This project questions the production of myth by means of architecture. And what remains when the layer of myth is no longer there.
In the first phase, the myths were defined. A new set of drawings and models was made, in which the myths were not present. The building was naked. What remained was a ‘neutral’ architectural space that could be described by composition, proportions and materials. Would it still be idolised? Would people still like to identify with it?
During the public presentation of the first part of the project, photographic evidence of the Myth of the Officers’ Club was collected by Kaunas locals. Memories of the Naked Building that few have seen in real life. Of the thirty photographs collected that day, five were translated into prints. The second series of prints is inspired by the first series, it works with it and plays on the composition of the previous ‘evidence’. All ten create a new myth, the Myth of the Naked Building.

‘The Myth of the Club’ is free to admire at a vanguard international exhibition in the former Kaunas postal building. The exhibit was inaugurated by the Lithuanian Prime Minister and Minister of Culture at the opening of Kaunas as European Culture Capital 2022.
