De Litouwse stad Kaunas is in 2022 Europese Culturele Hoofdstad. Samen met Kaunas, het Instituut voor Culturele Strategie (CSI, Lviv, Oekraïne) en Industra Art (Brno, Tsjechië) liet Intercommunale Leiedal kunstenaars reflecteren op modernistische architectuur binnen het Creative Europe-project Modernism for the Future 360/365.
Het modernisme is een van de sterkste recente verhalen in Europa op het vlak van cultuur en architectuur, een beweging die Europese regio’s verbindt. Toch zien wij nog steeds onontgonnen kansen voor interculturele dialoog, culturele identiteit en toekomstbestendig hergebruik van onroerend erfgoed. We betrokken zowel lokale besturen, kunstenaars, eigenaars, gebruikers, experten als het bredere publiek.
De kunstenaars-onderzoekers ontwikkelden met hun artistiek project een interpretatie van de gebouwen in kwestie als aanzet voor een holistische aanpak van duurzaamheid en een dialoog over het belang van modernistisch erfgoed voor deze en volgende generaties.
Expo in Kaunas, Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2022
Momenteel zijn de 16 kunstwerken te bewonderen op de toonaangevende internationale tentoonstelling Modernism for the Future 360 365 in het voormalige Postgebouw van Kaunas (Litouwen). De expo werd op zaterdag 22 januari 2022 plechtig geopend door de premier en de minister van cultuur van Litouwen naar aanleiding van de inhuldiging van Kaunas als Europese Culturele Hoofdstad 2022. In 2022, the Lithuanian city of Kaunas is European Capital of Culture. Joining forces with Kaunas, the Lviv Cultural Strategy Institute (Ukraine) and Industra Art (Brno, Czech Republic), Flemish intercommunal organisation Leiedal had artists reflecting on modernist architecture within the Creative Europe project Modernism for the Future 360/365.
A movement connecting regions across the continent, modernism is one of Europe’s strongest recent narratives in the fields of culture and architecture. Still, however, we are seeing unexplored opportunities for intercultural dialogue, cultural identity and future-proof reuse of heritage sites, for which we are involving local authorities as well as artists, owners, users, experts and the wider audience.
With their art projects, the artists-researchers developed an interpretation of designated buildings, initiating a holistic approach to sustainability and a dialogue on the importance of modernist heritage for this and future generations.
The 16 artistic interpretations are free to admire until 10th April 2022 in European Cultural Capital Kaunas at a vanguard international exposition in the former postal building.
